Building strong, vibrant communities at Xcel Energy’s Day of Service
Event contributed 7,900 volunteer hours, $260,000 in economic impact this year
Each year for Day of Service, Xcel Energy employees and community members dedicate thousands of volunteer hours to support local nonprofits. A tradition since 2010, the annual volunteer event was created as a tribute to the victims, survivors and first responders of 9/11, as well as all those who work to keep communities and the country safe. This year marked the 14th annual Day of Service for Xcel Energy, and around 2,200 volunteers from the company and the communities it serves took action to support nonprofit organizations.
“We come together year after year to put good energy into action that fuels growth, influences change and lifts up our neighbors,” said Bob Frenzel, chairman, president and CEO of Xcel Energy, who took part in the event by joining volunteers at the Bakken Museum in Minneapolis for landscaping and gardening. “Thank you to the thousands of volunteers who committed their time to making meaningful change and to the participating nonprofits for their continued work providing services, experiences and education to our communities.”

Over the past five years, Xcel Energy has supported nearly 600 Day of Service projects across its service territory, with a total of more than 15,000 volunteers and an estimated cumulative economic impact of more than $1.3 million.
On Sept. 13 and 14, volunteers dedicated over 7,900 volunteer hours to support 125 projects that ranged from packing meals and constructing homes for families in need to cleaning up nature trails and planting trees. Among the many other impacts of these projects, volunteers packed 130,000 meals, assembled 4,300 kits for teachers and distributed 4,000 dental kits. Volunteer efforts generated $260,000 in economic impact across communities the eight states the company serves: Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Mexico, South Dakota, Texas and Wisconsin.
More highlights from this year's event include:
- Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota: Over 900 volunteers dedicated about 3,000 hours, with an economic impact of nearly $100,000.
- Wisconsin and Michigan: About 180 volunteers contributed over 700 hours, with an economic impact of nearly $24,000.
- Colorado: Over 1,000 volunteers dedicated more than 3,100 hours, with an economic impact of $105,000.
- Texas and New Mexico: About 140 volunteers contributed nearly 1,100 hours, with an economic impact of nearly $36,000.
