Thank you to our customers in the Swansea neighborhood in Denver, for your patience and support of our crews as they worked to replace natural gas lines and meters during the recent natural gas service outage. We know it’s difficult to be without gas service if you use gas to cook or have a gas water heater.
About 700 customers in the neighborhood lost service on July 28 after a non-Xcel Energy water line damaged our gas infrastructure. As a result, water, dirt, and small rocks entered our gas lines and caused extensive damage to the system and many customers’ gas meters.
After working around the clock for several days, crews were able to restore gas service to all parts of the neighborhood on Aug. 3, and work is now under way to restore streets and yards affected by the repair work.
More than 300 Xcel Energy employees and contractors from around the state of Colorado worked continuously in the neighborhood to get your service back up and running as soon as possible. While we were able to restore service to some customers in the first few days, the impact of the water to our system was more extensive than originally anticipated.
To make repairs, crews pumped water, dirt, and small rocks out of the gas pipelines. The gas lines were replaced under the street along with gas meters at many customers’ homes and businesses. Crews replaced nearly 2 miles of pipeline with new polyethylene pipe to serve the neighborhood for decades to come. We were able to complete system repairs in several phases so we could restore service to our customers as soon as possible. Once repairs to the gas system were complete in an area, employees went door to door to replace customers’ gas meters if needed and re-light pilot lights on their gas appliances.
Crews are working to restore roadways that were excavated to repair and replace the gas lines. Contractors will also be going through the neighborhood to repair any damage to lawns that was caused by the work. You may continue to see our crews in the neighborhood in the coming days to monitor the new equipment.
