From smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles, batteries store energy and deliver it when we need it, playing an important role in everyday life.

Today, batteries do more than power our personal devices. They are becoming part of the energy system, helping integrate renewable energy and support grid reliability.

How battery storage works

Renewable energy sources such as solar and wind generate electricity when the sun is shining or the wind is blowing. That energy can be sent directly to the grid to power homes and businesses.

However, electricity demand does not always align with renewable energy production.

Battery energy storage systems help bridge that gap. They capture renewable energy when it is available and store it for later use. The stored energy can then be delivered when demand increases or renewable generation decreases.

This maximizes the use of renewable energy while supporting reliable electric service around the clock.

Strengthening grid reliability

Battery storage systems play an important role in maintaining grid reliability, particularly during periods of high demand.

At Xcel Energy, battery storage systems provide added flexibility to the electric grid. Energy can be stored when demand is lower and discharged when demand rises, providing an efficient balance between supply and demand.

Distributed battery storage networks can also function as virtual power plants, allowing multiple battery systems to work together to support the grid during periods of peak demand.

Investing in new storage technologies

Xcel Energy's battery storage systems primarily use lithium-ion technology, which can provide power for several hours.

Xcel Energy is also investing in next-generation energy storage solutions, including Form Energy's iron-air battery technology, a system that stores and releases energy through the rusting and un-rusting of iron.

While lithium-ion batteries are well suited for shorter-duration energy needs and can typically provide power for about four to five hours, iron-air batteries are designed to provide power for four to five days.

Supporting the energy future

As energy needs evolve, battery storage is becoming an increasingly important tool for delivering reliable service and integrating more renewable energy resources.

By investing in both established and emerging battery storage technologies, Xcel Energy is working to build a grid that is reliable, resilient and prepared for future energy needs.
