Xcel Energy is committed to supporting economic growth and development, strengthening communities and maintaining safe and reliable energy while keeping our customers’ bills as low as possible. We are focused on meeting the needs of a growing economy by building out and modernizing the energy grid — while leading the energy transition to meet the goals and aspirations of the communities we serve.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to provide reliable, affordable, sustainable and safe energy to the millions of people we serve,” said Bob Frenzel, chairman, president and CEO of Xcel Energy. “We are particularly proud of the progress we have made on our journey to a carbon-free electricity future, and we have done so with the most expansive set of clean energy resources in the country, including wind, solar, nuclear, hydro and natural gas.”
As we face unprecedented demand for energy, Xcel Energy is powering more of the economy than ever before while also protecting our climate, communities and national security. Our 2024 Sustainability Report, in its 20th year, shares more than 1,800 data points that reflect these efforts.
In 2024, we:
-
Cut carbon emissions 57% from the electricity serving our customers, compared to 2005 levels, as we powered local economies and communities. Over half of our energy mix is now carbon-free, three times higher than when our sustainability reporting began.
-
Committed to investing $45 billion in new generation, transmission and other projects across our eight-state service footprint over the next five years.
-
Spent $5.2 billion with small or local businesses.
-
Helped create nearly 3,200 new jobs, spurring $5.1 billion in capital investment.
-
Donated $14.5 million to help local communities. Employees and retirees also volunteered 89,000 hours, making a $3 million economic impact.
-
Connected 193,000 customers with $175 million in energy assistance — up from $20 million in 2005.
-
Restored 92% of customers’ power within 24 hours during active storm days – outperforming the industry standard – and had an overall electric service reliability of 99.98%.
We’ve closed or converted 26 coal units since 2007, most recently converting Harrington Generating Station northeast of Amarillo, Texas, to natural gas. We’ve also saved customers $5 billion through wind energy since 2017 and have enough wind capacity on our system to power more than 2.5 million homes, quadruple the amount we had in 2005.
Continuing to track this data and publish an annual report demonstrates our commitment to transparency and accountability as we strive to build a sustainable future for our customers, communities and economies.
When we released our inaugural report in 2005, originally called the Triple Bottom Line Report, we positioned ourselves as early pioneers in publicly declaring our commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement. Two decades later, while our industry and the global landscape have significantly changed, our core values and our customers have remained at the forefront.
“We have long been leaders in sustainability in this industry and we’re not slowing down now,” said Jeff Lyng, vice president, External Affairs and Policy and chief sustainability officer. “Our customers and policymakers are asking more from us as our service plays an even larger role in their homes and businesses. We must continue to balance environmental responsibility with economic prosperity and community vitality.”
