Guided by the shared belief that customers come first, Xcel Energy and Kwik Trip continue to work together to make the Upper Midwest more accessible for electric vehicle (EV) drivers.
Finding reliable, convenient and safe charging in public areas can be challenging for EV drivers. In 2022, Kwik Trip saw not just a gap, but an opportunity to provide its customers with a solution rooted in its company values: service, trust and community impact. That’s when Kwik Trip reached out to Xcel Energy to help advance EV charging in the region.
By late 2024, Kwik Trip worked with Xcel Energy to install 16 direct current fast chargers at four stores, each site carefully chosen for ease of access along some of the region’s busiest routes.
The Kwik Charge brand offers CCS and NACS connectors, meaning nearly every EV driver can plug in at a safe, well-lit and fully staffed location any hour of the day. With at least 150 kilowatts of power available per dispenser for multiple vehicles, or up to 400 kilowatts for a single car, these charging stations are built for speed and reliability.
Over the past several months, customer response has been overwhelmingly strong, with Kwik Trip seeing many positive comments on PlugShare, a community-based app that connects EV drivers with charging locations.
"Like Xcel Energy, Kwik Trip is deeply committed to their customers — and it shows in everything they do. Their focus and strategic approach lead to their overall success,” said Matt Biren, Xcel Energy’s commercial EV account manager for Wisconsin. “This valuable partnership, and the expansion of the Kwik Charge program, is also helping Xcel Energy achieve our goal of enabling the charging infrastructure for 1.5 million EVs across our service footprint."
Kwik Trip is quickly expanding its EV services. As of fall 2025, it was nearing completion of its fifth site with chargers in La Crosse, Wisconsin. It has also identified four more sites to be built in the next few years — in Wisconsin and eventually Minnesota — and plans to roll out a Kwik Charge mobile app that provides charger location, availability and pricing.
Together, Xcel Energy and Kwik Trip are not just building EV infrastructure — we’re building trust and community connections, ensuring the Upper Midwest provides every EV traveler with best-in-class customer service.
